National Carers Week 2011

This year’s Carers Week, which ran from 13 to 19 June, was the biggest ever nationally with more than 1,700 organisations holding events to raise awareness of the support and services available for the country’s six million carers.  With this year’s theme of ‘The true face of caring’, Carers Week also aimed to highlight and recognise the real contribution carers make, which can often go unrecognised by society.

LINkrotherham, in partnership with Rotherham Carers Corner and Carers Forum, hosted an event in Rotherham town centre on Friday 17 June to promote Carers Week.  More than 20 local organisations were on hand to offer support and information to carers on topics such as mental health, staying independent and carer support.

The day proved popular, with more than 1,000 people visiting the themed stalls, which were set out along Effingham Street in the town centre.  The mayor, Councillor Shaun Wright, also attended and spent some time chatting to stallholders and visitors.

Stallholders were kept busy with enquiries throughout the day and made the following comments:-

“Thank you for a superbly organised event.”

"Very good networking event, plus we helped a lot of carers by signposting or actually made appointments for carers assessments of their needs. Since the event we have had 400 hits to our website by carers and public who had close family who were carers.   Great information sharing day. Well Done"

“We need more people like LINk in Rotherham.”

Of the people visiting the event, 89 were referred to or said they will use a service, 176 were signposted to other organisations or groups and in total 1,076 were given information from one or more of the stalls.

Carers Week was formed in 2001 and is a partnership of nine national charities - Age UK, Carers UK, Counsel and Care, Crossroads Care, Dementia UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, MS Society, Parkinsons UK and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
